According To The 2009 Forrester Groundswell Awards B2B Social Media Is Still Mostly Tech Focused

Since we started Social Media B2B we have spent a lot of time tracking down examples of B2B companies using social media. I think we have done a good job especially going beyond only B2B software and hardware technology companies.

Forrester, the well regarded research organization, recently announced the winners of their 2009 Groundswell Awards that celebrate the effective use of social media by businesses. The awards did have a B2B division and you can see all of the winners on a post on the Groundswell blog.

Looking at the B2B winners as a group, I came up with a few conclusions:

1. B2B Social Media Use Is Still Dominated By Technology Companies
2. Some Organizations Are Successfully Generating Leads Using Social Media
3. Large and Small B2B Businesses Are Both Using Social Media Effectively
4. In The Right Situation B2B Communities Can Work Often Better Than B2C

I commend Forrester for bringing attention to these great B2B examples. For 2010 we need to continue to move past the idea that B2B social media is only for technology companies and realize it has applications across most industries.

I hope to see a host of industries represented in next year’s Groundswell Awards. What are some non-tech examples you refer to that didn’t make it to the Groundswell Awards?
